Chelsea appointed Simon Hooper for Brentford tie four weeks after Tottenham vs Liverpool blunder
It has been revealed that Simon Hooper will officiate Chelsea's clash against Brentford this weekend, four weeks after making several controversial decision during Tottenham's meeting with Liverpool. Mauricio Pochettino will welcome the Bees to Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon, and either side will be hoping that the referee's performance doesn't overshadow what could be a fiery west London affair.
Last month, neithr Hooper nor the Video Assistant Referee, Darren England, corrected their mistake to adjudge Luis Diaz as offside during Spurs' vs Liverpool. Just after the half-four mark, the Liverpool winger thought he had put his side ahead following a great pass from Mohamed Salah.
The Egypt international wrestled with Dejan Kulusevski on the right-wing before threading Diaz in-behind Micky Van de Ven. Through on goal, the Colombia international beat Guglielmo Vicario and, as he wheeled away in celebration, the linesman incorrectly flagged for offside.
Strangely, Diaz's goal against the Lilywhites was ruled out and falsely adjudged to be offside. Later on Saturday evening the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) released an apology and admitted to 'significant human error'.
Hooper also controversially issued two red-cards to Liverpool players. Curtis Jones was given his marching orders at the half-hour mark before the referee brandished a second yellow card for Diego Jota just minutes after receiving his first.
Now, Hooper is set to take charge of Chelsea's clash against Brentford this weekend – and Blues supporters are all saying the same thing on social media. One user by the handle @90minfoot_euro on X, formerly known as Twitter, wrote: «Hopefully he learns from his mistake and does his job well.»
