Chelsea have a special clause that could stop Liverpool from signing one of the club's former players this summer.
The Blues can match any offer for Crystal Palace's England international defender, Marc Guehi, who is reportedly wanted by the Anfield outfit in the summer. Liverpool will likely need more defenders for the 2024-25 season.
Joel Matip is out with a long-term injury and his contract ends in the summer. Also, Virgil van Dijk will be 33 when the next season starts.
Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate are the only other main centre-backs for Liverpool, but Gomez has mostly played as a full-back this season. Even though Jarell Quansah, who is 20, is doing well, Liverpool will likely still sign a new defender in the summer.
Guehi has performed well since he moved from Chelsea to Palace in the summer of 2021. The 23-year-old is now one of the best young defenders in the Premier League and could be set to represent England at Euro 2024. The Daily Telegraph says that Liverpool wants to sign Guehi in the summer to help their defence, whilst reporting that Manchester United are also keeping an eye on him.
Chelsea could swoop in and steal a deal due to a special clause in Guehi's contract from when he joined the south London team nearly three years ago. If anyone makes an offer for Guehi, Chelsea will know about it and can match the offer.
