Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel has delivered a firm warning to Mauricio Pochettino regarding his future at Stamford Bridge. The Blues boss has come under pressure on numerous occasions during his first campaign at the club with Chelsea still lingering in mid-table despite Pochettino finding success in cup competitions.
Earlier this week, just a few days on from losing the Carabao Cup final to Liverpool in heart-breaking fashion, Chelsea secured a spot in the FA Cup quarter-final with victory against Leeds United. The Blues are now set to face Leicester City in the next round, having avoided the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool in the draw.
Winning that competition is likely to be Chelsea's only hope of securing European football for next season with 17 points between them and the top four and a gap of nine to the top six. Before delving into Pochettino's tenure in west London, Mikel offered his thoughts on Chelsea securing some form of European football
“Of course, top four is out of reach,” he told Standard Sport.. “If we qualify for the Europa League, I would see that as a major improvement, but to get there, we have to improve and go on a run of winning games. The Europa League would be a massive achievement and we can build on that. The final was a massive disappointment.”
If Chelsea do secure European qualification, it is entirely possible that Pochettino is not the man in charge to lead that charge with Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali set to make a decision on his future this summer. With that in mind, Mikel has offered his thoughts on Pochettino's situation at the club, which included making a brutal admission.
