Chelsea have confirmed that the club will be offering free coach travel to fans making the trip to Wolves on Christmas Eve after the Premier League moved the fixture to December 24 last week. It is the first game to be played on this day in nearly 30 years and has caused a mass outcry at the decision.
«It is totally unacceptable that Wolves v Chelsea has been scheduled for Christmas Eve,» the Chelsea Supporters' Trust wrote in a statement on Thursday, October 26. «Since rumours began to circulate on this issue, the Chelsea Supporters' Trust has been clear that selecting this kick-off time will place another hurdle in the way of many matchgoing supports.
»Not only could this lead to staffing issues at Molineux, but holiday transport timetables will further inconvenience supporters.
«On Tuesday 24 October, we requested an urgent meeting with the relevant decision-makers within the Premier League. We expect that this meeting will be held very soon, alongside Wolves 1877 Trust, and the Football Supporters' Association.
»The Chelsea Supporters' Trust will formally request that the Premier League properly consults supporters on this issue and that they reverse this decision."
The club have now made the announcement that travel for those that wish to attend the game will be provided for no additional cost. «Following the latest Premier League fixture announcements, Chelsea will be playing Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday 24 December,» the statement starts. «The club is aware that transport options are more limited than usual on this date, as it is a Sunday and also Christmas Eve.
