Chelsea have found out who they will face in the Carabao Cup semi-final following their dramatic win over Newcastle United. Callum Wilson put the Magpies ahead at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night after a mistake from Benoit Badiashile before Mykhailo Mudryk found the Blues an equaliser in stoppage time.
The Ukraine international went on to score Chelsea's fourth and final spot-kick in the penalty shootout before Djordje Petrovic denied Matt Richie to book a place in semi-final draw. Elsewhere, Fulham defeated Everton while Middlesbrough stormed past Port Vale and Liverpool overcame West Ham.
Now, in order to secure a place in the final at Wembley, Middlesbrough will lock horns with Chelsea and Liverpool will play Fulham. The first leg of the semi-final ties will be played week commencing January 8, 2024, with second-leg fixtures taking place week commencing January 22, 2024.
Ahead of the Blues' win over Newcastle, Mauricio Pochettino was asked how much he'd like to win the competition. The 51-year-old said: «Of course, I want to win a trophy here in England. I want to lift a trophy now in this competition because it is important. My wish and my desire is to win and this is one of the competitions we are involved and it is possible.»
Then, when quizzed on what it would be like to lift his first trophy on British soil, Pochettino replied: «It means more for the people than us. It means a lot because we want to deliver the job for our club, for our fans. Delivering a trophy, the most important thing is to win. It's difficult to measure, it's really important, it is a priority.
