Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson has been sent a damning warning by former Blues defender Mario Melchiot over his continued failure to score golden chances.
Jackson has been Mauricio Pochettino's first-choice centre-forward this season after arriving from Villarreal for £30.1million in the summer. The 22-year-old has scored seven Premier League goals this season, but he has missed a string of big chances.
The striker has recorded 43 shots in the league this term, meaning it takes him 16 shots to score one goal — a worrying statistic. In the recent 2-1 win over Crystal Palace, the Senegal international squandered a big chance before seeing a goal ruled-out for offside.
Because of the constant uncertainty over his clinical edge in the final third, questions have been asked of the Blues striker. On Christmas Eve, Raheem Sterling was criticised for not passing to his teammate for a free goal in the 2-1 defeat to Wolves and some have noticed that it's not the first time he's avoided passing to Jackson.
Speaking to ESPN, Melchiot has claimed that Jackson is missing something to make him a top striker in the Premier League. «Today I watched him and he’s making it very, very hard for himself. The competition is there, I know Poch said he needs time and time is really the difficult part but [Christopher] Nkunku I like what he’s doing and I hope he keeps progressing but Jackson I don’t know.
»I was never a striker. He has the speed and the power but he doesn’t have the calmness in his head that I feel a proper striker needs. He’s not an old guy, he’s still got time but the only thing he needs to work on is the calmness.
