Chelsea will shift their focus from their Premier League struggles as they prepare to host Brighton & Hove Albion in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday. Despite their poor form this season, the Blues are expected to face a tough challenge against the confident Brighton side.
The Blues go into this match as the slight favourites at 5/4 with Betfred to progress through to the fourth round of the EFL Cup whereas Brighton at 15/8 to continue their fine form against their hosts and a draw is 11/4.
In the previous round of the Carabao Cup, Chelsea secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over League Two team AFC Wimbledon. After falling behind, Noni Madueke equalised just before halftime, and Enzo Fernandez scored the winning goal in the second half. However, this win was only the second for Chelsea across all competitions this season. They have been unable to find their rhythm and suffered defeats in their last two matches at Stamford Bridge, including a 1-0 loss to Aston Villa.
Apart from their on-field struggles, Chelsea has also been plagued by a spate of injuries. Captain Reece James and summer signing Christopher Nkunku are among several players currently sidelined. Additionally, right-back Malo Gusto will be unavailable due to suspension following his red card against Aston Villa.
In contrast to Chelsea's difficulties, Brighton has been one of the standout teams this season and has continued their impressive form from last year. They received a bye in the previous rounds of the Carabao Cup and will make their first appearance in the competition.
