David Moyes reacts to West Ham's 'brilliant achievement' after Europa League rout
West Ham's manager David Moyes is happy after his team got into the quarter-finals again. He called it a «brilliant achievement» because West Ham beat Freiburg 5-0.
Moyes picked an attacking line-up for the game. They had to make up for losing 1-0 in Germany last week, with Lucas Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen, Aaron Cresswell, and Mohammed Kudus, who scored twice, helped them win 5-1 over both games.
«We were really unhappy from the first game, the staff and the players. We thought we should not have come out with the result we had. We had to put it right and thankfully we did.
»I think for West Ham to be three years in a row for quarter-finals in European competition, I am not sure it has been done before in the club's history.
«For where we have come from, to be in another quarter-final is a brilliant achievement. The club has moved on so much. We want to try to make it better if we can.»
Paqueta scored the first goal for West Ham just nine minutes into the game, followed by Bowen who celebrated his recent England squad selection with a fantastic 20-yard goal. Despite this, Freiburg's Roland Sallai reminded West Ham that they were still in the game with a close miss.
The game remained tight until six minutes into the second half when Cresswell, who had previously cost West Ham in a semi-final against Eintracht Frankfurt, redeemed himself with a goal from the edge of the area.
However, the highlight of the match was yet to come. Kudus, a former Ajax player, ran about 70 yards through the Freiburg defence and calmly finished.
Kudus then celebrated his goal by sitting on a photographer's stool in front of the ecstatic home fans while his teammates celebrated around him.
