David Raya has denied that he is in a battle with Aaron Ramsdale for a starting place in the Arsenal team followingthe 2-0 win over Brighton in the Premier League. The Spaniard kept his eighth clean sheet of the season in 17 performances for the Gunners despite the continued pressure of the dynamic between himself and his goalkeeping teammate.
Mikel Arteta made the decision to bring the Spaniard in after Ramsdale signed a new deal with the club and has put faith in the on-loan Brentford man whose deal is expected to be made permanent with the option that exists in the deal. The narrative was heightened in the past couple of months after comments from Ramsdale’s father Nick and chanting from Arsenal supporters of the England international’s name at matches in which Raya was starting.
Raya says that he has blocked out the outside world’s comments. The Spaniard faced particular scrutiny for wayward passes to Julian Alverez and Cole Palmer but reiterated when asked by football.london about the pressure that comes with playing the way Arteta wants that he is determined to deliver on Arteta’s wishes.
“I think pressure is what you put on yourself,” he said. “I don’t think [about] the pressure from the outside, because I don’t listen to the outside world.
“I am just focused on my football and training, and games when the gaffer puts me in. That’s the most important thing and just try to play the way the gaffer wants me to play.”
The distribution has improved in time anda throw to Gabriel Martinelli against Brighton garnered plenty of attention on Sunday. However, the scenario with Ramsdale does persist but Raya has said that the situation has a benefit for both players.
