RB Leipzig sporting director Rouven Schroder has revealed why Liverpool midfielder Fabio Carvalho struggled during his loan period at the club after the youngster's move at the Bundesliga was club was ended prior to him joining Hull for the remainder of the season.
The former Fulham midfielder was recruited by the Reds in 2022 as Liverpool forked out £7.7m for the then teenager as they banked on his future development.
A loan move to the top German outfit was meant to prepare him for reintegration back into Jurgen Klopp's first team, however the Portuguese international struggled to find form overseas.
He previously played a pivotal role in earning Fulham promotion back to the Premier League and Schroder explained Carvalho struggled to deal with competition in Leipzig.
The 21-year-old swapped Germany for England recently with him returning to the Championship with Hull on a loan until the end of the season and Schroder explained why the initial loan deal with Leipzig had been terminated early.
'We consciously chose Fabio last summer,' he told reporters in Germany.
'He had a great season with Fulham in the English second division, which is very physical.
'We said to ourselves: great talent, good age, has already gained his experience.
'Still, you only get to know a player as an end product when he's there.
'Fabio has a great character. But he realised: 'OK, there's a competitor here, I have to do more!'. And we noticed that he didn't want to face the competition.'
Carvalho made 15 appearances during his short stint in Germany but failed to score or register an assist for Marco Rose's side.
