Malo Gusto has pinpointed how Chelsea proved their doubters wrong to defeat Aston Villa in Wednesday's FA Cup fourth round replay at Villa Park.
Mauricio Pochettino's men came into the clash on the back of only two wins in their last six games. Sunday's 4-2 defeat to Wolves at Stamford Bridge had placed more pressure onto Pochettino, who has emerged as some bookmakers' favourite to be the next Premier League manager to be axed.
Despite Villa being the favourites to set-up a fifth round tie with Leeds United, the Blues were the better team and stormed into a 2-0 lead in the first half thanks to goals from Conor Gallagher and Nicolas Jackson — his first goal since the 2-0 win over Sheffield United on December 16.
Enzo Fernandez added a third with a fantastic free-kick before Moussa Diaby grabbed a consolation goal late on. The cup win eases the pressure on Pochettino for the time-being after intense pressure over his future.
After the game, Gusto insisted that the mentality in the squad was the difference between the two sides. «We are very happy to win this game,» he said. «We know it is very difficult to win here. That's why we are very happy.»
Asked about the difference from Sunday, he said: «I think it was the mentality. The mentality of us all together was very nice and that's why we won today.»
