‘Devastated’ Steven Gerrard reveals one big regret about Liverpool exit

Steven Gerrard has admitted he wishes he had stayed at Liverpool for one more year after he missed the opportunity to work with one man in particular.

Months after Gerrard left the club, Jurgen Klopp took over as manager from Brendan Rodgers and began to turn the club around.

Gerrard revealed in a TikTok video posted by The Anfield Wrap that he was gutted he missed the chance to play under Klopp.

«I was devastated. I obviously made a decision not to sign a year extension to go to America, whereas if I'd took the extension, I might have got six months under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp,» he said.

Klopp eventually led Liverpool to a Premier League victory in 2020 — something Gerrard never achieved in his time at the club.

And the Reds icon added: «In hindsight, if I'd have knew what was gonna come off, 100 per cent, I'd have signed the year extension, and I'd have put up with four to five months of Brendan to get six months of Klopp, for sure.»

After 17 years at the club, Gerrard left Liverpool and signed for LA Galaxy in January 2015.

He had a stellar career with Liverpool, winning two FA Cups and the Champions League.

The midfielder admitted that during his final season at the club, he was unhappy with the amount of game time he was receiving.

He added: 'Being under Brendan's management at the time, I was getting told my game time was gonna get less and less.

«I didn't wanna be a sub for Liverpool, I didn't wanna be a squad player. I still felt that I was the best midfielder there at the time.»

Gerrard instead made the decision to move to the American side where he made 34 appearances before retiring from professional football in November 2016.
