Dimitar Berbatov shares some similarities to Arsenal summer signing Kai Havertz.
Both tall, talented and slick with the ball at their feet. Both made their names at Bayer Leverkusen before moving to a London club in the Premier League, Havertz joining Chelsea and Berbatov joining Tottenham Hotspur.
But that is really where the comparisons end. After establishing himself as one of the Bundesliga's best players, Berbatov joined Spurs in 2006 and instantly hit the ground running, earning a place in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year in his debut campaign before helping the north Londoners win a League Cup in his sophomore season.
That impressive form helped earn him a big-money move to Manchester United, where he won two Premier League titles and a Golden Boot among other individual and team accolades. Meanwhile, Havertz's time in England hasn't gone quite as smoothly.
After three somewhat inconsistent years at Stamford Bridge, albeit with some flashes of brilliance, the German international completed a £65million transfer to Arsenal this summer. After four league outings, it hasn't been plain sailing for the 24-year-old at the Gunners just yet but Berbatov is urging fans to give the talented playmaker time to adjust to his new surroundings.
«I love Havertz because he came from Leverkusen where I played for five years», the Betfair ambassador told football.london. «I will always back him to succeed but it is going to be tough and he can feel it and sense it.
