People spent a week building a massive bonfire in the centre of a Merseyside town.
Earlier this year Wirral Council, like many in Merseyside, confirmed it would not have any council-run firework displays, but this didn't seem to affect those in Birkenhead North who enjoyed a massive display and bonfire. Taking place on land next to Ilchester road, across from Saint James’ Church it was organised by members of the community.
Speaking to the ECHO many people in the area said this has been a tradition for many years with some attendees claiming this year was the best it has ever been. Paula Gann, 56, said; "It was very popular. I've lived around here for years and years and a lot of people do go, but it seemed to be bigger and better this year.

"I think it has had a very positive effect. It was very well organised this year. I know they do it every year, but they had a lot of lads there building it for around a week before."
People who spoke to the ECHO about the bonfire said around 200 volunteers help steward the event and keep it as safe possible. Paula, 48, was one of the many volunteers and has been involved for nearly 40 years, following in her dad’s footsteps.
She said: “It’s generational, it gets passed down. My son’s 30 and he used to build it as well. But I think because I’ve been here for years and years it’s become part of me; I like helping.
"The kids will help as well, when they come from school. It’s a big community thing Bonfire night. It just brings everyone together.”
