The company behind plans for a European Super League states that two-thirds of football fans in the UK support its controversial plan.
A22, the company behind the new attempt to start a European Super League, released findings from a survey that they paid for, saying that many fans want one. The first Super League idea failed due to fan protests and clubs changing their minds, but A22 is trying hard to bring it back to life.
A ruling from the European Court of Justice said UEFA, which runs the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League, broke European competition law by stopping the ESL from being created. Now, A22 wants to make a new competition to rival these, with three divisions and 64 teams, with promotion and relegation, and says it already has 20 clubs ready to join, reports the Mirror.
It says it has the legal basis to set it up and the clubs to play in it, and now it is trying to show that enough fans will pay to watch it. The survey found that 72% of European fans and 65% of UK fans back a Super League. This survey was commissioned by A22 and carried out by a company called OpinionWay, which says its work was «conducted in accordance with the latest scientific standards».
Bernd Reichart, the boss of A22, said about their survey: «We have evidence that the desire for a European Super League as a much more exciting alternative to the current European club football competition is stronger than ever.» But when you look closer at the survey, it seems the numbers might not be quite right.
