TWO dreadful Kieran Trippier errors, within the space of seven minutes, gifted a victory to Sean Dyche’s team as Everton continued their impressive resurrection and climbed out of the bottom three.
His first, after 79 minutes, saw Trippier stumble just inside his own half, presenting the ball to Dwight McNeil who sped half the length of the field before scoring, left-footed, from just inside the box.
And soon after, a tired-looking Trippier was dispossessed by Jack Harrison who sped deep into Newcastle territory before squaring for an unmarked, and fast-arriving, Abdoulaye Doucoure to sweep the ball in.
In the 96th minute, substitute Beto stroked in his first Premier League goal for the club as he chased Nathan Patterson’s through ball and held of two converging defenders before scoring from six yards.
It may not have been a classic but there was plenty riding on what was a thoroughly watchable affair between two clubs in the midst of their own respective “crises.” For Everton, the 10 point deduction relating to the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules may be under appeal but until Evertonians and Dyche see some, or all, of those points back on the scoreboard, relegation is a very real danger.
For Eddie Howe, meanwhile, his list of unavailable players hit 12 at Goodison, hardly an ideal state of affairs given the weight expectation on him and his Saudi-backed “project” this season.
Those respective concerns could have been eased, for either manager, in the first half with both sides, and both sides’ key strikers, missing one glorious chance each.
