Joe Thomas: I don’t play Amadou Onana today. This game should not be treated as a free hit, every game matters and last season a weaker Everton unit earned a very valuable point at the Etihad. But pragmatism is also required with that home game against Palace a week on Monday growing in importance each day. The eight day gap represents a good opportunity to bring the likes of Onana, Doucoure and Coleman to full fitness for a game against a relegation rival struggling with its own injuries and on a downward spiral.
The three consecutive draws this side has earned in the league have been great results in the circumstances they were obtained in. Those injury issues still persist and I would back the same team that started against Spurs in Manchester. Godfrey deserves to keep his place after two good displays and keeping Young in front of him will add experience and protection. Harrison has been the best Doucoure alternative and I would play him centrally and hope he can spring a chance for Calvert-Lewin, who needs to be given the chance to get among the goals because the sooner he does that the bigger the impact it will have on this season. City start slowly and often concede. Dyche’s Everton start fast and create chances. A lot needs to go right for a positive Everton result
