Cole Palmer was the main architect of the Blues’ downfall as he ran riot with four goals on the night, the last of which came from the penalty spot while Nicolas Jackson and substitute Alfie Gilchrist netted the others but while their hosts were on form, the visitors made it too easy for them at times with some slack defending and a rare blunder from goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

A chastening night for England’s number one, there was not much he could do about the well-placed first goal and saved Nicolas Jackson’s effort ahead of the second only for the rebound to be headed in but held his hand up for the glaring error he made to gift the ball to Palmer for hat-trick as he kicked a right-foot effort straight at the Chelsea man from a Branthwaite back pass and there will be question marks over him for the fourth too before being sent the wrong way from the penalty spot and beaten again in the last minute ahead of stoppage time.
