If Ralf Rangnick is to return to club football with Bayern Munich, he's keen for things to go differently from his short-lived Manchester United spell.
The 65-year-old, who spent half a season as United's interim boss during the 2021-22 campaign, wasn't permitted to make any signings during his one transfer window. However, he is reportedly after complete transfer control at Bayern.
Rangnick is currently in charge of the Austria national team, but Bayern are said to be keen to bring him in when Thomas Tuchel leaves in the summer. Bayer Leverkusen's Xabi Alonso and Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann had both been linked with a move to the Allianz Arena, but both have chosen to stay put.
United had a tough time of things under Rangnick, who took over with the team seventh in the league and could only lead them one place higher. Had he been permitted any of the names on his six-man transfer shortlist, though, things might have been different.
According to Salzburger Nachrichten, Rangnick could be confirmed as Bayern boss within a matter of weeks. He wouldn't take over immediately, though, instead arriving after Austria's Euro 2024 campaign.
The paper indicates there's a potential sticking point, though. Rangnick is said to want the final say on player recruitment, above director of sport Max Eberl and sporting director Christoph Freund.
How might things have panned out with Rangnick enjoying similar privileges at Old Trafford? Potentially pretty well, though that assumes the targets would have wanted to link up with him.
"There was no such [transfer] dossier, and it was never wanted by the club," Rangnick told BILD in October 2022. "But even without such a script, it was clear to everyone that there was a need in many areas.
