Fiorentina announced on Tuesday the death of the club's general manager Joe Barone at the age of 57. Barone was rushed to hospital last Sunday when he was in Bergamo with the team as Fiorentina were due to play their game against Atalanta.
In the end, Barone did not overcome the problems that caused him to be transferred to a hospital in Milan. Italian media say the Fiorentina general manager suffered a cardiac arrest.
"With deep sorrow and immense sadness, Fiorentina has lost one of its most important figures, a figure who marked the recent history of the club and who will never be forgotten. General manager Giuseppe Barone, after an illness suffered on Sunday, died at the San Raffaele hospital in Milan," the club said in a statement.
