Forgotten Man City keeper seals transfer exit to link up with 'Ted Lasso'

Manchester City goalkeeper Zack Steffen has joined Major League Soccer side Colorado Rapids - where he will link up with 'Ted Lasso'.

Steffen joined City during the summer of 2019 from Columbus Crew in a £7million deal and went on to make 21 appearances in all competitions. The 28-year-old also played in the 2021 Carabao Cup final win over Tottenham. Last season, Steffen was on loan at Middlesbrough, helping them reach the Championship play-offs.

But ultimately, his move to the UK cost him his opportunity to be the USA No.1 at the 2022 World Cup. Having at one point looked in pole position, he was ultimately usurped by Nottingham Forest's Matt Turner.

The Rapids confirmed that Steffen had signed a three-year contract with a club option for an additional year, having acquired his discovery rights from the New England Revolution in exchange for $50,000 (£39,400) in 2024 General Allocation Money. How much City have earned from the deal hasn't been announced by either party.

“We are incredibly happy to bring Zack to the club. He is a top player with big experiences, and we know he will add so much to our group,” said Rapids head coach Chris Armas on the club’s website. “His quality, leadership and winning mentality will help us for years to come.”

Armas is the former Manchester United first-team coach who worked alongside Ralf Rangnick during his short spell at Old Trafford. Armas, who would subsequently go on to work at Leeds United before taking on the role with the Rapids this summer, was ridiculed with by players during his time at United and handed the Lasso moniker among members of the playing staff.
