THE long, four-month goodbye for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool began with a perhaps understandably subdued FA Cup fourth-round stroll over Norwich and the unavoidable feeling that the German may be building towards a spectacular finale.
The win, featuring goals from Curtis Jones, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Gravenberch, carried Klopp’s team through to a last-16 tie against Watford or Southampton.
And victory maintained the hope from all within the Anfield empire that the German’s extraordinary nine-year reign will end with more silverware in May.
After all, this was just the third time in nine attempts that Klopp has taken Liverpool this far in a competition which, it is fair to say, has often featured well down his list of proprieties.
And with a place in the EFL Cup Final booked next month, a healthy lead at the top of the league table and a Europa League Final in Dublin in May well within sight, few would bet against Liverpool fulfilling the maximum 29 fixtures that are left in Klopp’s reign and winning a trophy or two.
Following the shock announcement that Klopp will leave in May, there seemed to be a slightly more heartfelt rendition than normal of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” before kick-off and there was a heavier than usual camera presence around the Liverpool dugout as he took his place.
The Klopp terrace tribute, sung to the tune of The Beatles’ “I Feel Fine,” was aired far more than usual, as well.
“I said, don’t sing the song during the game,” joked Klopp. “And people have stopped listening to me, so that’s good.
“It’s fine. We won the game and we scored after that (song) so, if I was superstitious about singing the song, that’s over.
