West Ham United striker Michail Antonio has issued a «public apology» to Liverpool fans following his prediction at the beginning of the season. The Jamaican international brazenly predicted that the Hammers would finish above Jurgen Klopp's side, following last season's dismal showing from the Merseysiders, but has been forced to retract on his statement.
Antonio has become a target for Liverpool supporters after a series of quips at the Anfield club in recent years. Ahead of their meeting in the North West last September, the 33-year-old suggested that David Moyes' side had the capability to finish above Liverpool and they could inflict disappointment on the Reds.
The prediction came amid Liverpool's strong run of form that saw them unbeaten in four following their opening day draw with Chelsea. However, it wasn't to be for West Ham as Liverpool ran out 3-1 winners at Anfield. Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota were on the scoresheet to extend their winning run.
Both clubs will meet again at the end of April, in the third meeting between the two clubs after the Carabao Cup demolition which saw hit West Ham for five. And speaking on the latest episode of the Footballer's Football podcast, the Hammers forward admitted he regrets his wild prediction from earlier in the season.
«Before we move forwards I have got something to say,» he said. «At the beginning of the season I said a comment.
»It was a bit wild. It was very wild. I said that there was a possibility that West Ham could finish above Liverpool this year. I'm not going to lie, I said it was my chest.
