Gareth Southgate drops two England stars from his squad to face Italy at Wembley
England manager Gareth Southgate has left two England stars out of his matchday squad for the Three Lions latest Euro 2024 qualifier against Italy on Tuesday night.
Southgate had named 25 players in his squad for the international break, but managers are only permitted to name 23 in their matchday squads.
The rule left the Three Lions boss needing to omit two players from the match against Italy, which could see England seal qualification for next summer's finals in Germany.
Southgate's side require a point against Italy to seal qualification to Euro 2024.
Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah and AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori were the unlucky players to be left out of Southgate's squad for the match.
Nketiah had made his England debut as a second half substitute in England's 1-0 win over Australia on Friday.
The 24-year-old striker played the final 17 minutes at Wembley after replacing Ollie Watkins.
Tomori had played for an hour alongside Lewis Dunk in the England defence, before being withdrawn for the latter stages for John Stones.
The defender was earned his fourth England cap, but struggled in the much changed line-up for the match.
His omission from the matchday squad against Italy will come as a blow as the 25-year-old seeks to force his way into Southgate's plans for next summer's European Championships.
Tomori has played a key role in helping AC Milan lead the early Serie A table, with the Italian giants winning seven and losing just one of their eight matches.
England will also be looking to avenge their loss to Italy in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley when the two sides meet on Tuesday night.
