Gareth Southgate faces potential England Euro 2024 blow with Tottenham friendly
England boss Gareth Southgate could face a tricky situation ahead of Euro 2024, with some of his potential squad members possibly jetting off to Australia for a post-season friendly.
Tottenham and Newcastle are set to play at Melbourne Cricket Ground on May 22, just days after their final Premier League match of the season. Newcastle's FA Cup exit last weekend opened the door for the Magpies to face Spurs in a post-season friendly, which will see the two clubs jet off for Australia immediately after their final league game of the season on May 19.
A decision on the squads taken Down Under will be made nearer to the time, but Southgate could see three players potentially in his Euro 2024 squad fly halfway across the world days before they link up on international duty. Tottenham's James Maddison and Newcastle attacker Anthony Gordon were named in the England squad for the March friendlies with Brazil and Belgium, while Kieran Trippier is a strong candidate to feature in this summer's European Championships in Germany.
As one of its famous sons, having moved there from Greece as a child, Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou is a popular figure in Melbourne with various murals of him across the city and it already had a strong contingent of Spurs fans before his appointment. England kick off their Euros campaign against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen on June 16.
The Three Lions then face Denmark in Frankfurt four days later and round off Group C against Slovenia in Cologne. Southgate's contract with the FA runs until December 2024.
