Gary Lineker pulls out of Match of the Day tonight as BBC host shares update

Gary Lineker has confirmed he won't be hosting this week's Match of the Day due to a "rotten cold".

The former England striker who has been the face of BBC's flagship football programme for over 20 years, shared the news on social media. He said: "Some good news for some: I've been silenced....with a rotten cold that seems to be lasting forever. Hate missing hosting @BBCMOTD but I'll be watching".

Mark Chapman, the host of Match of the Day 2 on Sundays, will replace Lineker on Saturday night's show. The Premier League highlights show airs at 10:30pm on BBC One tonight and will include action from Everton's trip to Manchester City and Liverpool vs Burnley.

Lineker, one of the BBC's highest paid presenters, earned around £1.3million from the corporation last year. The 63 year old has two years left on his BBC contract, with questions surrounding his long-term future.

When asked about what he'll do next after Match of the Day, Lineker said: "I don't know. I've still got almost two years left on my contract. So it's too early to contemplate that at the moment.

"But I mean I love doing Match of the Day, but, you know, obviously what happens with... football rights and things like that, will determine things and you know, things change."

Five years ago, the former Everton player decided to stop presenting Champions League matches on BT Sport so he could spend more time with his family. Earlier this season, long-term Match of the Day pundit Ian Wright, said he's leaving the show.
