Match of the Day host Gary Lineker summed up his former club Everton’s shooting woes against West Ham United by quipping that: “They can’t finish their dinner.”
Having plundered 40 goals in 57 games in his solitary season at Goodison Park in 1985/86 – finishing the campaign by winning the Golden Boot with England at the World Cup finals in Mexico – Lineker was one of football’s most-potent marksmen. The current Everton side are crying out for a poacher of his ilk with Sean Dyche having dropped centre-forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin for the Hammers’ visit after his number nine had gone 20 games without scoring after netting the winner in the reverse fixture at London Stadium back on October 29.
Despite the switch and Calvert-Lewin’s replacement Beto making up for his first half penalty being saved with the header that put the Blues in front after having gone 12 games without a goal himself, the hosts still squandered a host of inviting opportunities. Manager Dyche has previously spoken about giving his players “the bliss to miss”, insisting that he won’t chastise them for not scoring, so long as they keep getting into the right areas, but having also warned about taking their chances in what he calls “the moment of truth,” the 52-year-old’s frustration was shining through in the words he uttered in his post-match press conference after his side lost 3-1 in a game they had dominated for long periods.
