Funds raised from a recent charity football match held in memory of former ECHO journalist Dan Kay will go towards supporting the local community in Liverpool.
The Annual Dan Kay Memorial Trophy match was played for the first time on Sunday, October 22, between friends and family of Dan, who died suddenly in May, aged 45. A team of Dan Kay’s Monday night football friends triumphed 7-3 against a team of his former colleagues, including ECHO journalists.
As well as the playing of the match, a fundraising event also took place following the game at Aigburth People’s Hall. Prizes donated for the raffle included signed Everton and Liverpool shirts, a night stay in the Titanic hotel, a £200 Montirex voucher and a spa day at the Hope Street Hotel.
In total, £5,578 was raised from the raffle, as well as the sale of a special match programme and a number of donations. As a result, three charities close to Dan’s heart – An Hour for Others, Mind and Imagine If Trust, all received donations.
Explaining how the money will be used at An Hour for Others, founder Kevin Morland told the ECHO: “The money raised at Dan's fundraiser is going towards supporting our community hub in Tuebrook in the build-up to Christmas and in the early part of 2024 to support the groups we run.
“The hub is really needed in the local area and is used by kids as young as 6 and adults as old as 86! Dan supported many families of AHFO through the lockdowns by dropping off food and essentials each week.
“Even after his sad passing, he is helping people in our city. All of us at AHFO thank Dan's family from the bottom of our hearts for choosing ourselves as one of the organisations that was supported through the match in Dan's memory."
