Controversial striker Luis Suarez has spilled the beans on a collapsed transfer deal that would have resulted in Karim Benzema ending up at Arsenal.
During an interview with a Uruguayan radio station, one-time Gunners target Suarez revealed that he had agreed to join Real Madrid from Liverpool, but the deal fell through after his infamous bite on Giorgio Chiellini during the 2014 World Cup. Suarez had an amazing season in 2013/14, scoring 31 goals in just 33 Premier League games and nearly helping Brendan Rodgers' Liverpool team win the Premier League title.
This was despite missing the first five matches of the season due to a 10-match ban for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic in April 2013. The Uruguayan tried to leave Anfield that summer, which led to Arsenal making a cheeky bid of £40m plus £1 to try and trigger a release clause. But Liverpool stood firm and didn't sell, convincing Suarez to stay for another year.
However, after a record-breaking season with the Anfield club, it was expected that Suarez would move on after the 2014 World Cup. Both Real Madrid and Barcelona were interested in him. In his chat with DelSol 99.5 FM, the 37-year-old revealed that he had actually agreed to move to Real Madrid and was all set to replace Karim Benzema, who was supposed to be sold to Arsenal.
But when hot-headed Suarez bit defender Chiellini during Uruguay's World Cup match against Italy the infamous incident resulted in a four-month suspension for him and made Los Blancos rethink their approach. In the end, Suarez ended up joining Barcelona after signing a £65m deal. He confessed that moving to Camp Nou was always his dream.
Suarez said: «Before the 2014 World Cup, Real Madrid wanted to sign me, and everything was on track.
