Arsenal icon Ian Wright has admitted he is interested to see Mikel Arteta rotate goalkeepers David Raya and Aaron Ramsdale throughout the 2023/24 campaign. Ramsdale started all four of the Gunners' Premier League fixtures before Sunday's clash away to Everton, when Raya was handed his debut following his summer arrival from Brentford.
The Spanish international kept a clean sheet at Goodison Park as the north Londoners defeated the hosts 1-0 thanks to a second-half strike from substitute Leandro Trossard. After the full-time whistle, Arteta launched a passionate defence of his decision to change goalkeepers, claiming that he has even been tempted to switch shot-stoppers during matches.
Now, former England international Wright has given his verdict on the goalkeeping situation at the Emirates Stadium, predicting Ramsdale to get the nod on Wednesday when Arsenal take on PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Champions League. Speaking on Premier League Productions, Wright said: «Well it looks to me like Ramsdale will probably play on Wednesday against PSV.
»What Mikel is going to have to deal with now is every week, every other week now, people are going to be thinking, 'Well is it going to be Ramsdale or is it going to be Raya?' The main thing is that they are not different in the way they are doing it, so it’s not making the defenders have to think differently.
«That’s the main thing. But it’s going to be a question that Mikel is probably going to have all the time now, who is he going to play? On Wednesday I think it will be Ramsdale and I think that Ramsdale will probably play the week after too [against Tottenham].
