Ian Wright has claimed that Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard is starting to get targeted this season. The Norway international enjoyed a superb 2022/23 campaign, netting 15 times in the Premier League, a hugely impressive feat when you also consider that none of those goals came from the penalty spot.
But Odegaard has struggled to find the back of the net as frequently this term, netting just four times in the league, two of those coming from spot-kicks. On Saturday, however, the 24-year-old was back to his best, enjoying an excellent display against Wolverhampton Wanderers that saw him score whilst also creating a plethora of chances for his teammates.
Mikel Arteta's side won 2-1 in the end, although on another day they could have scored four or five, with Odegaard registering a whopping 1.3 expected assists (xA), as per fbref. When speaking about the Gunners skipper, Wright argued that one of the reasons for his inconsistent displays has been the approach opposition players have taken when it comes to marking the talented playmaker.
Wright told Premier League Productions: «What has happened is that teams are rightly targeting Odegaard because of how good he is for us and how integral he is in passing through the lines and keeping it moving for us. Teams are making sure they are getting someone close to him or doubling up on him.
»What he has shown, and he has shown it recently, is if he has time and space, then he will hurt you." Odegaard isn't the only Arsenal star being doubled up, though.
