Joel Matip scored an own goal deep into stoppage time as Tottenham Hotspur picked up a dramatic 2-1 victory over Liverpool on Saturday night.
However, the late goal only told half of the story at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as the PGMOL were forced to admit post-match that the decision to disallow Luis Diaz's goal in the first half was 'a significant human error'. The admission came after it also emerged that VAR mistakenly believed that the on-field decision had been to award the goal.
The Reds also had Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota sent off, with the dismissal of the former coming following a VAR review in which referee Simon Hooper was sent to the screen. Jones was initially shown a yellow card by Hooper.
Son Heung-min opened the scoring before Cody Gakpo restored parity in first-half stoppage time. However, Matip's own goal six minutes into stoppage time handed Ange Postecoglou’s side all three points. And below is a look at how the national media and the ECHO’s Ian Doyle reported on the game.
