Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid appear to have recreated the iconic football moment involving Vinnie Jones and Tottenham Hotspur favourite Paul Gascoigne. This time, it was Marcus Thuram who got a bit too close for comfort with Stefan Savic.
Jones and Gascoigne's moment is well known, but now we have a modern-day version. The incident occurred during the second leg of the Champions League tie between Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid.
Atletico were defending a throw-in in the 100th minute when Thuram reached down and squeezed Savic in a sensitive area. Savic fell to the ground in pain, unlike Gascoigne who smiled.
The incident was reviewed by VAR, but Thuram escaped without any punishment before being substituted. Savic had the last laugh as Atletico came from 1-0 down to score twice and force a shootout, with Inter missing three penalties.
Savic said of the game: «It is. dream night for us. If I wasn't on the pitch I'd have loved to be in the stands to watch this game. It was an incredible game, almost like a final. I'm so happy because we were in a difficult situation and no one believed in us except for the fans. The boss said before the game that we needed to be ready because it would be a long night.»
Savic is now part of a famous photo, just like the one with Jones and Gascoigne from 1988. Jones once said he grabbed Gascoigne because he was scared of being shown up by the top player.
