Jamie Carragher has slammed the tragedy chanting of Luton Town supporters during Sunday's clash with Liverpool.
Sections of the Hatters' home support could be heard singing 'always the victim' chants at the Liverpool supporters throughout the second half at Kenilworth Road. It is a chant that has underlying connotations relating to the 1989 Hillsborough disaster in which 97 Liverpool supporters lost their lives.
Former Liverpool vice-captain Carragher, who was on co-commentary for the game at Kenilworth Road, hit out at Luton supporters for the nature of their chanting and insisted they were "better than that".
“At the start of the season, I was involved in something about tragedy chanting and supporters coming together," said Carragher, live on Sky Sports. "I have just heard something a couple of times in this game. Supporters have got to have rivalry but we are better than that. A lot of clubs have been guilty of that over the years but football fans are better than that."
Carragher was quickly hailed on social media for his intervention in an occurrence that has become all too routine during Liverpool games both home and away in the Premier League in recent years.
