Just £9.5million separates the cost of the fee between Kai Havertz and Jeremy Doku yet their contributions to their respective club this season tell a different story. Stylistically, the pair perhaps represent the best example of players who fool the eye test and whilst the Belgian weaved left and rightagainst Chelsea as he has done in so many games this season, impressing with his technical ability but his end product left wanting, his German counterpart was on the winning side again, scoring for the fifth time in the league.
It was back in November when I first theorised that Doku had been no more impactful as a signing than Havertz. This was before the Arsenal man’s goals against Brentford, Sevilla, Brighton, Luton and now Burnley.
The numbers swung heavily in Doku’s favour but his goal and four assists in a single match against Bournemouth had buffed his output across the season. Fast forward to the mid-point of February and even the numbers are supportive of the theory.
Doku has a goal or an assist in just three Premier League games so far this season. Havertz meanwhile has six and this doesn’t count the shot which rebounded to Bukayo Saka against Liverpool a couple of weeks ago.
Speaking ahead of the weekend, Mikel Arteta was asked about his £65million man. Havertz breaks the eye test somewhat as mentioned and the Spaniard’s description of his highlights this perfectly.
“I love him,” he said. “I think we all love him as a player as a person, everything that he brings to the team.
