“Coming to press conferences is my responsibility, even more so after a defeat. If we had won, I wouldn’t have come,” said Kylian Mbappé (25) in a press conference previewing France’s encounter against Chile on Tuesday. However, he was there, and the reason for that? Saturday’s humbling defeat to Germany.
Les Bleus were off the pace, lethargic and seemingly unmotivated in their 2-0 defeat against Germany, the hosts of this summer’s Euros. With just one more match before the tournament, there was a level of concern given France’s level, and whilst Mbappé refused to attribute great meaning to the defeat, the Paris Saint-Germain forward did nonetheless state that it constitutes a warning.
“When you see the match, there are lots of warnings. The nuance is that it’s a friendly. But when you watch the match, without knowing what was at stake, there are warnings everywhere: technically, tactically, in terms of desire and even in terms of efficiency too. These are the warnings that we’re talking about, but it is better to learn now,” he said.
The captain also believes that there was a lack of leadership shown during the defeat against Germany and ensured that Les Bleus would show a reaction against Chile. “The leadership was deficient. That’s clear, but we were outplayed in every aspect. There are indicators, even if it was a friendly match. It is up to us to react so as to avoid doubt creeping in, which isn’t currently there,” said Mbappé.
