Liverpool handed Mohamed Salah AFCON clarity after Egypt stunned by DR Congo
Mohamed Salah will not be returning to the Ivory Coast for the Africa Cup of Nations after Egypt were unexpectedly dumped out of the competition on penalties by DR Congo on Sunday night.
Salah has returned to Merseyside to undergo treatment after suffering a hamstring injury in his country’s group stage clash with Ghana on January 18, as agreed by the Egyptian FA. He was due to rehabilitate at the AXA Training Centre before flying back out for the latter stages of AFCON, should his team have made it that far.
However, the 31-year-old will now stay in-house as he recovers ahead of his final games under Jurgen Klopp. Salah is projected to be sidelined for up to three more weeks due to his setback, meaning he will miss the Premier League clashes with Chelsea and Arsenal in the coming seven days.

Last week, Egypt national team doctor Mohamed Abouela was hesitant to put a precise timeframe on Salah’s return after X-rays showed the damage was greater than first thought. He said: "When will Salah return from injury with his treatment at Liverpool?
"I can't say that because muscle injury depends on how much you get better on a daily basis. But I can say that we worked with Salah for four days well, and the player improved in them as well as possible."
Salah has had a remarkable injury record with Liverpool, having only missed a handful of games with setbacks during his near-seven-year stay. He remains the club’s top scorer this season with 18 goals in 27 matches.
