Sporting CP legend Manuel Fernandes has backed Viktor Gyokeres to join Liverpool or Bayern Munich over Chelsea. The 25-year-old has been one of many strikers – like Ivan Toney too – linked with a move to Stamford Bridge this month as Mauricio Pochettino hopes to further bolster his frontline in the January transfer window.
Gyokeres, who sees his contract at the José Alvalade Stadium expire in 2028, has featured 17 times for Sporting in the Primeira Liga this season, scoring 13 goals and providing seven assists. His impressive performances have led Ruben Amorim's side to the top of the table, reportedly courting the interest of several top European clubs.
The Sweden international's meteoric rise to superstardom is of particular interest to supporters in the United Kingdom following his brilliant spell at Coventry City in the Championship last term. Gyokeres almost dragged the Sky Blues into the Premier League, but Luton Town reigned superior in the play-off final at Wembley.
His performances earned an exciting £21.5m move to the Portuguese top-flight in the summer, where he penned deal which reportedly includes a £73m release clause. Despite speculation over his future, Gyokeres recently claimed that he is happy at Sporting.
Speaking last month to Portuguese publication Record, the Swede said: «I think it's a bit like when Sporting came in to sign me. I'm very happy here and I don't care about any interested parties at the moment.
»I'm enjoying every day here and not thinking about what's going on around me. Yes, there's talk of big clubs, but for now, it's just news. That is all."
