Man City lead race to sign USA wonderkid Cavan Sullivan
Manchester City are frontrunners in a race with Europe’s elite to sign American prospect Cavan Sullivan.
Sullivan, 14, has travelled the continent for visits to Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and turned out for Borussia Dortmund in last summer’s Kevin De Bruyne Cup in Belgium.
Mail Sport understands that City have stolen a march in the race to sign the Philadelphia Union attacking midfielder, who has been nicknamed ‘Captain America’ within the industry.
Sullivan, left-footed with an eye for goal, has already played for Union’s Under-19 side. The MLS club’s senior coach, Jim Curtin, claimed last year that the teenager ‘has the talent and ability to become a household name and is doing really big things’.
Paris Saint-Germain are thought to have been interested as well but Sullivan is leaning towards the Premier League champions.
In August and still 13, Sullivan led the US to the Under-15 CONCACAF title, collecting the Golden Ball in the process.
Half-Germain on his mother’s side, he is not eligible to confirm a move to Europe until he turns 16 and City have discussed the possibility of sending the youngster to sister club Lommel SK for at least a year to gain experience.
Sullivan comes from a family of footballers, with his father Brendan plied his trade for five clubs across six years in Australia’s A-League, while mother Heike captained the women’s team at the University of Pennsylvania.
His twin brothers Ronan and Declan, 16, have their sights set on professional careers.
The eldest brother, 19-year-old Quinn, is a USA Under-20 international and at Philadelphia Union. Quinn regularly shares footage of the youngest sibling on his social media.
