Manchester United’s underperforming stars must take a page out of Scott McTominay’s book, according to Ally McCoist.
And the TNT Sports analyst says that his fellow Scot could be the key if United are to defeat Bayern Munich at Old Trafford. United must beat the German giants and hope Copenhagen and Galatasaray draw to progress into the last 16.
And after Saturday’s latest horror show against Bournemouth, McCoist says “throwback” McTominay is one of the few United players displaying the desire required to succeed at the top.
“Absolutely, 100 percent. Scott McTominay, with where Man Utd are right now, McTominay is a key part of Man Utd,” McCoist said.
“I don’t care what anybody says, he really is. Because the way he plays the game as well, the goals he’s been chipping in with too, he’s a hard working boy that appreciates where he is and relishes the fact he’s playing at Manchester United and you can see it, it’s evident.
“He runs about, he gets on the end of things. I think he had six good attempts at goal against Chelsea … that’s just a desire to run about and get into the box.
“McTominay, fair play to him, Steve Clarke for Scotland played him on the right hand side of a three in defence and the biggest compliment I can pay to someone like McTominay is I think he’s a throwback.
“And when I say throwback, I mean old school. The manager could give him a jersey and he wouldn’t even look at the number and he could say right where do you want me to play and there’s something refreshing about that – someone that just wants to play for his club and country and it’s a bonus to him. And McTominay has become key for Man Utd.”
