Manchester United are undergoing a significant period of change at Old Trafford with Sir Jim Ratcliffe's arrival leading to a rejig of the boardroom.
Already we have seen CEO Richard Arnold leave his position and John Murtough's role as sporting director appears to be hanging by a thread. Several names have been swirling around as to who Ratcliffe may look to appoint to replace Murtough should he leave.
Former Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton and AS Monaco director Paul Mitchell has been deemed in some quarters to be the favourite but The Telegraph reports that another name is in the running: Paolo Maldini. To fans of a certain age, Maldini is the standard-bearer for defenders.

During his time at AC Milan he became a legend of the game and earned respect from many for his dedication to the club even when other options were out there. However, this did not stop Sir Alex Ferguson from trying.
Back in 2019, Ferguson recalled how he attempted to sign Maldini. "When I met his father he was quite formidable, I got a shake of the head. I remember him saying: 'My grandfather is Milan, my father is, I am Milan, my sons are Milan. Forget it.'"
Eventually Ferguson did have to forget it and Maldini would retire at Milan in 2009. However, the 55-year-old's work since his playing days has not been fully Milan-centric.
Up until June of this year, Maldini held the role of technical director at the San Siro club. Reports do suggest though that the decision to end this partnership was not of his choosing.
