Chelsea could have their long-term No.1 goalkeeper arriving at Stamford Bridge in the coming days.
That is according to former Liverpool goalkeeper Brad Friedel, who has been speaking about New England Revolution shot-stopper Djordje Petrovic, who is on his way to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have agreed a £14million deal with the MLS club to see the 23-year-old move to west London on a long-term contract.
Petrovic is due in England this week to complete a medical with the Blues ahead of his move from the United States. The Serbian goalkeeper is expected to come in and compete with fellow new signing Robert Sanchez, who was brought in from Brighton for around £25million earlier this month.
Sanchez, who has started Chelsea's first two matches of the 2023/24 Premier League season and conceded four goals, is expected to remain as Mauricio Pochettino's first-choice in goal following the departures of Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy already this summer. However, Pochettino wanted someone he could rely on in case anything happens to Sanchez, or perhaps to play in cup competitions.
Petrovic looks to be that man. The Serbian is very highly rated out in the United States after signing for New England in April 2022. He is an excellent shot-stopper and has great composure when in possession, something Pochettino is looking for with his goalkeepers.
Friedel, who is a regular watcher of the MLS, is a massive fan of Petrovic. In fact, the former USA goalkeeper has tipped Petrovic to become the long-term No.1 goalkeeper at Stamford Bridge and has claimed he will be hard to displace once he is given a chance in the first-team.
