Liverpool are reportedly competing with Bayern Munich to appoint sporting director Max Eberl, who has made a name for himself in the Bundesliga.
The Reds’ recruitment is currently overseen by Jorg Schmadtke, who joined the club after the departure of Julian Ward. The former Wolfburg chief agreed a one-year deal at Anfield, leaving Liverpool with time to plan his successor.
It has been stated by Bild that Eberl has been ‘contacted’ by Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan but that the 50-year-old is also wanted by Bayern Munich. Eberl spent over 13 years as sporting director at Borussia Monchengladbach, overseeing a renaissance in the club’s fortunes, before leaving for RB Leipzig last year. Eberl has been without a job since September, with Leipzig citing a lack of commitment due to reported advances from Bayern.

Eberl signed the Switzerland international from FC Basel for around €9m, back in 2014, and the 34-year-old went on to make a total of 335 appearances for the club. Sommer has since replaced Andre Onana at Inter Milan.
Prior to becoming sporting director in 2008, Eberl was head of Gladbach’s academy and helped to develop a young Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who made his first team debut in 2011. The German has spent almost a decade as Barcelona’s number one.
