Chelsea star Mykhailo Mudryk has sent a heart-warming message to Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier after the England international's two mistakes that helped the Blues go through to the Carabao Cup semi-finals.
Following Callum Wilson's early opener, it was a dominant performance from Chelsea who consistently put the Magpies' waning defence under severe pressure throughout both halves before they finally found a breakthrough late on. Trippier's header from a Malo Gusto cross couldn't reach goalkeeper Martin Dubravka which allowed Mudryk to pounce and fire the Blues level in the 92nd minute.
The equaliser meant the game went straight to penalties and following Cole Palmer, Callum Wilson and Conor Gallagher all scoring their penalties, Trippier walked forward in order to redeem himself for the defensive mistake earlier. However, he fired his spot-kick wide of the post, opening the door for Mudryk to score his and then Djordje Petrovic to save Matt Ritchie's penalty to send the Blues through to the semi-final.
Immediately following the match, manager Mauricio Pochettino admitted how happy he was with the result and that it was the side's belief in each other that had helped them reach their goal on the night. He said: «I am so pleased and the players deserve some credit. After conceding the way we did, we didn't deserve to concede, it can affect any team. We reacted really well and dominated the game against a very good team like Newcastle.
