Neal Maupay has explained how one moment of s***housery eventually led to Argentina winning the World Cup.
In an infamous game that saw Matteo Guendouzi's Arsenal career come to an end, Maupay's challenge on Bernd Leno ended his season and saw Emi Martinez deputise for the German.
Martinez then used the opportunity to come out of the shadows as a journeyman loanee, impressing so much he moved to Aston Villa where he became their's and Argentina's no.1.
That eventually resulted in him starring during the 2022 World Cup for the victorious Albiceleste, denying France's Randal Kolo Muani with a stunning match-saving stop, before being the star of the shootout in the final.
Remembering the first domino that fell, Maupay told Sport Bible: «I got so many messages that said I basically won the World Cup.
»Leno got injured after contact with me and then Emi played and then for Argentina, so yeah."
After being told that Martinez had not played in the Premier League for three years, Maupay replied: «Yeah exactly. He should be grateful.»
The match has largely remembered by Arsenal fans due to Maupay's expert dark arts.
Leaving one on Leno might have been an accident but it forced the German off the pitch as Martinez replaced him.
The Frenchman went on to score a 95th-minute winner against Mikel Arteta's men while at Brighton, causing further fury, during their Premier League clash in June 2020.
But there was also an incident with Guendouzi with the Arsenal star grabbing his countryman by the throat at full-time after losing his cool.
It led to an intense reaction on social media but that did not faze Maupay.
