A new VAR protocol has emerged following Liverpool’s controversial defeat to Tottenham Hotspur before the international break.
In a game full of incidents, Curtis Jones was shown an early red card after a VAR review, leaving Jurgen Klopp's side with an uphill battle. This task then doubled in size when Diogo Jota was shown two yellow cards in quick succession to leave the Reds with nine men for more than 20 minutes. However, it was another moment in the game that sparked a nationwide debate about the standards of refereeing. Reds winger Luis Diaz wrongly saw his opening goal in north London ruled out for offside due to a communication issue between officials.
VAR official Darren England incorrectly believed that the original decision had been to award the goal and was heard saying ‘check complete’, following the audio being released by PGMOL. By the time England and assistant VAR Daniel Cook were both aware of the mistake, it was deemed too late to rectify as the game had already restarted.
