Calum Scanlon is aiming to follow in the footsteps of four Liverpool players after making his first team debut.
The 18-year-old has enjoyed a relatively rapid rise since signing from Birmingham City in 2021. An instant regular for the academy side, Scanlon has since made the step up to the U21s team and has found himself on the fringes of Liverpool’s first team after being included in Jurgen Klopp’s squad for pre-season.
Scanlon faced an important decision when he learned of Liverpool’s interest during his time with Birmingham City. Many players may have opted to stay with the Championship side as an easier route to earn regular first team minutes but the left-back had a different perspective.

"It was a no-brainer really," Scanlon told Liverpool’s club website. "I knew what I had to do. I knew it was the best for my development.
"When I first heard Liverpool were interested in signing me, I was ecstatic. It was an amazing feeling. I went to the training ground, met the coaches and I knew I had found the perfect place to develop. It was surreal.
"It was an amazing club with amazing history, passionate fans. It was really everything you could ask for. I just instantly knew that this was a special club that I wanted to be a part of."
Scanlon’s decision paid off in October when he was handed his Liverpool debut against Toulouse in the Europa League, followed by a second appearance against Union SG earlier this month.
