Jamal Lewis has fallen out of favour at Newcastle United
Championship side Watford could be set to end Jamal Lewis’ frustration at Newcastle United.
The Northern Ireland defender was left out of manager Eddie Howe’s Premier League squad in January and remains out of his plans ahead of the new season.
Howe gave Lewis a start in last night’s friendly at Rangers but it looks like a move could be on the cards and a loan to Watford may materialise.
The 25-year-old full-back has made 36 appearances for the Magpies during his time at St James’ Park but he’s been increasingly starved of first team action.
After missing out on a move to Liverpool, he joined Newcastle from Norwich City in 2020 and played 26 times in his debut season for the club, but made just six appearances the following campaign.
Lewis featured for just nine minutes in the Premier League last season, with Dan Burn established as Newcastle’s first choice left back.
Niggling injuries sidelined him under Steve Bruce and, as investment floods in on Tyneside, he has been unable to get into Howe’s side after groin surgery last season.
Lewis, who has earned 30 caps for Northern Ireland, had played 100 times for Norwich before joining Newcastle, after coming through the Canaries academy.
He was part of the Norwich side that lifted the Championship trophy in 2019.
Newcastle want to strengthen their options at full back but have targeted a right back in Southampton’s Tino Livramento.
Lewis’ injury woes resurfaced when he had to pull out of the Northern Ireland squad with a knee problem.
He missed the Euro 2024 double header against Denmark and Kazakhstan.
