Stellenbosch FC emerged as 1-0 winners against Cape Town City in a DStv Premiership match at the Danie Craven Stadium on Friday night.
The win elevated Stellies to the third spot on the league standings and they will be looking to clinch their first-ever major trophy when they take on TS Galaxy in the 2023 Carling Knockout final on 16 December.
City, on the other hand, remain second on the league standings and they will be determined to bounce back to winning ways when they host Mamelodi Sundowns in a league game on 24 December.
The match got off to a lively start with both teams attacking with speed and City fired the first warning through Khanyisa Mayo whose effort was saved by goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluka in the 25th minute.
The deadlock was broken in the 40th minute when Devin Titus set up Anicet Alain Oura who made no mistake as he beat keeper Darren Keet to hand Stellenbosch a 1-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
The Citizens surged forward in numbers after the restart as they looked to level matters, but they struggled to create chances and coach Eric Tinkler introduced striker Jo Paciencia in the 77th minute.
However, City were reduced to 10 players in stoppage time when their star player Mayo was sent off after collecting his second yellow card and ultimately, the game ended in a 1-0 win in favour of Stellenbosch.
