Manchester United's offside goal against Arsenal would have been given if Arsene Wenger's proposed new rule had been implemented
A major change to the offside rule, advocated by former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, would have denied Declan Rice his big moment in a Gunners shirt following his £105million transfer and would likely have handed Manchester United the win at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal secured a pulsating three points with two stoppage time goals in the clash with United at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday - Rice making it 2-1 before Gabriel Jesus added the gloss with a third.
But everything could have been so different had United been awarded what they thought was the winning goal in the 88th minute.
There has been a plethora of controversy surrounding offside decisions in the Premier League in the last few seasons, with millimetres and toes being given as offside when lines were drawn by the VAR before those strict rules were loosened somewhat. The lines drawn were then made thicker, to give attackers a bit more of a benefit, although controversy remained high.
The current rules mean that a player is offside when any part of the body is closer to the opponent's goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent. However, Wenger, who is FIFA's chief of global football development, wants to make further changes to the offside rule.
This would mean that if any goalscoring part of the body is behind the last defender, the attacker will remain onside. This would have a huge benefit for strikers and cause teams to change the way they play the high line, with almost all of the goals in last season's campaign that were ruled offside by VAR likely to be allowed under the new proposals.
It could, however, be some time
